“Under The Banner of Heaven”
(Part One)
By
A.H. Scott
.
Tiny hamlet of Clifton is located in Fairfax County, Virginia. Being only 161 acres in size, Clifton is one of those types of locations which will bring to one’s mind the clichés of small-town America. Oh, and of course there is a quite inviting stretch of road which leads any visitor downtown to Main Street.
Speaking of Main Street; in June 2020 there was a new addition to the décor that hung from the between the street signs from either side of the street that would catch the eye of anyone walking along or driving past it.
It was a black banner with white lettering upon it that could be seen by anyone driving by or walking down the street.
Seven words, just seven words it read. Friendly and welcoming or divisive and damning was how it was seen, for it depended on the vision of the person viewing it: ‘Welcome to Clifton where Black Lives Matter’.
Was this a bunch of BLM activists taking direct action and putting this banner up in the middle of Main Street just to shock the predominantly white citizens of this small town in Virginia?
Nope, it was the leadership of the town council themselves that ordered the creation and raising of the banner after the Black Lives Matter demonstrations across the nation in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd.
The idea of the banner was to be one to show reverence and recognition of the founding of Clifton. Most town residents supported the banner, but a few of them were ticked off to the extent of voicing their opposition to that item which hung over Main Street.
In this case, a resident living in nearby Fairfax did not raise their voice, but tapped their fingers across a keyboard in a letter to the town’s Mayor.
“Would you please remove the BLM sign from Clifton? As leaders of this community, you should be smarter than promoting such a group as this, who uses race to foment chaos to destabilize the nation.” – Ginni Thomas, resident of Fairfax County[1]
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa, Miss Ginni!
Well, well; I don’t think I ever remember seeing any members or affiliates of that group donning hoods and matching robes in a parade while marching down Pennsylvania Avenue in a grainy film clip from September 13th 1926. Nor, have members of that group been indicted on seditious conspiracy charges by the Justice Department in the present day.
So, when Ginni Thomas wants to talk about fomenting chaos to destabilize this nation she shouldn’t feign amnesia over where she was in the crowd upon the Ellipse rally when Donald J. Trump was giving that damnable speech on January 6th, 2021.
Some may think it’s her way-out way of the pot calling the kettle black. Yet, the only thing which comes from the darkness is the lady’s dubious associations.
Pot and kettle, Ginni and Clarence; self-projection always has a way of boomeranging on persons when they think they are above the fray.
Yet, in the case of the fringe being on top, they are exactly where they have chosen to be. Mainstream of ideology isn’t the way for the Thomas’, as in word and action they have shown that this is how Clarence and Ginni roll along.
And, just as Ginni demanded a banner taken down, she wanted an election overturned. I guess what Ginni wants, Ginni’s gonna’ work on getting it.
From that June stir of her letter to Clifton’s mayor, poof, the banner had suddenly been vandalized and ripped down from Main Street under the dark of night in July 2020. Dog whistles can take the shape of any object, including words strung together.
In under a month’s time, a simple banner with words that seemed self-explanatory and commendable had been fingered with intolerance by a woman with a golden chip on her shoulder that thinks everything she does not like agree with should be removed from her sight because she thinks she knows better than a town council in a town where she does not reside.
Wow, that is Ginni Thomas!
As the scheme to overturn the election of Joseph R. Biden was percolating in the final months of 2020, Ginni was in a texting tornado with Mark Meadows, John Eastman, and anyone else who was down for this shady scheme of unconstitutionality.
For Ginni Thomas, it was from under one banner to another, as her ire against a simple swath of canvas blowing gently over the Main Street of the tiny town of Clifton drifted onward to the persistent myopia of unwinding the election results of 2020.
Under the banner of giving free speech the back of her lily-white hand to under the banner of what she perceived as a heavenly mission to keep Donald Trump in office with those praying hands of hers, has once again proven the fringe is the normal.
It is that same strain of self-righteousness which Ginni Thomas operates upon that has revealed the fervency over what she desires to occur that has placed her actions under the spotlight of the January 6th Committee.
Ginni is a true believer to theories, lies, and even lettered alibis. Okay, she can believe whatever she wants. But, in being Mrs. Clarence Thomas, it might not be so easy for her to just think the side-eye and questions will cease if she ensconces herself behind his black robe.
And, by the way, a black robe isn’t Kryptonite against an impeachment from the Congress.
Now, of course saying the word impeachment anywhere near a Supreme Court Justice would sound off-the-wall. But, saying the word coup and the President of The United States of America in the same sentence would also have sounded bat-shit crazy before the 45th Occupant was in office.
So, anything can be possible.
Ginni on the go! She’s here! She’s there! She’s just everywhere Ginni’s a female version of Forest Gump. You might as well just call her Ginni Gump! Omnipresent she is, from throughout the right-wing bloodstream onward to the overflow into elements of broader culture.
A rally here, a coup-plotting there; Ginni Thomas is deep in the mix. Yet, Mrs. Clarence Thomas just didn’t just flourish overnight as a power player in the game of influence.
Back in 2010, when Ginni Thomas launched her lobbying firm, Liberty Consulting[2], she became somewhat of a fixture on the national media circuit giving her political analysis on issues and candidates of the Tea Party. During an appearance on “Good Morning America” in a segment with George Stephanopoulis about the rise in anti-government feelings, Ginni Thomas had a way of saying a few lines of words that were ever so profound. And, in looking back on them from the lens of 2022, it is quite sobering in the aftermath of all that has happened within the twelve years since 2010.
“I think the Democrats are pretty worried about what’s coming. So, I’m not worried about what’s coming. I love America. I think there’s great people coming our way.” – Ginni Thomas, 2010[3]
Also in 2010 was an event titled, Liberty Xpo & Symposium, which was a conservative convention with Ginni Thomas co-hosting a ‘Remember The Ladies’ Banquet. One of the people who spoke at that symposium was Stewart Rhodes, founder of the recently formed Oath Keepers in 2009.
“Ginni’s ability to make connections and communicate with folks on the ground as well as on Capitol Hill is most impressive.” – Kimberly Fletcher, President of Moms For America[2]
Kimberly Fletcher, who gave such a glowing testimonial of Ginni Thomas over a decade ago, spoke at two protests on January 5th, 2021. The first of which was Moms for America, where had Fletcher giving praise to an odious[4] declaration made by a freshman Republican House member from Illinois named Mary Miller. Yep, this circle of conservatives seems to go round and round.
12 years ago it was 2010 and Ginni Thomas was a woman making her mark and making varied connections, which have implications in the present day.
Another pebble along the timeline for Ginni Thomas’ fellow travelers in the course of many years had been in 2018, when she hired a woman who had texted of ‘hatred of black people’ to assist her in conservative media ventures. She could have hired anyone, but Miss Ginni decided the person best for the job was Crystal Clanton.
“I HATE BLACK PEOPLE. Like fuck them all…I hate blacks. End of story.” – Crystal Clanton, 2017[5]
Clanton now clerks for Federal Appeals Court Judge William Pryor. Be a racist and get a plum gig is the way to move up the ladder in conservative quarters. Oh, by the way, when the text said ALL BLACKS, she meant ALL BLACKS, no exceptions in differentiating Ginni’s husband[6] from the rest of the blacks. Uh,huh!!
“We were not going to get through this without a civil war” – Stewart Rhodes, Oath Keepers[7]
I guess there are some people you can hang out with and some people that can hang you out. Hmm, just sayin’.
Sometimes things are nuanced and then there are others which are in black and white.
If a pigeon ever so white spends a few seasons with a black crow, it can always return in the end to the flock from which it came. When that aforementioned ‘civil war’ comes, does the crow actually think it will be spared as being something different from all the others of its’ kind, just because it proclaims it’s adoration of the white pigeon as it’s ‘best friend’?
A spreading malignancy of cabin compliancy and complacency can make ya’ resonate ‘Uncle’, when it comes from the spouse of Ginni.
Oh, Uncle!
Once again, like a rotten recurrence, the issue of racial sensibility is void; or in more blunt terms straight-up racist when it comes from each of the Thomas’. Purposeful it seems, as these two peas in a pod seem to get their jollies off of doing anything and everything diametrically opposing of their sex and race. She gives the middle finger to the women’s movement, as he gives his thumb downward on anything which might afford a smidgen of retrospect or recompense for ongoing injustices targeted at African-Americans.
Clarence is “Clearance”!
“Clearance” Thomas!
Clarence is all in for the sale. Call him ‘clearance’, for he is in for the full sale and liquidation of rights and opportunities for anyone else that isn’t in adherence to his constrictive covenant.
And, when everyone else has been written off, sold off, and just plain cast-off because of their circumstance of attribute; the one who has embodied himself in such a gleefully ingratiating way in the suit of clearance shall stand with a shiver in his spine and trembling jaw of begging for mercy when the vipers eventually turn their fangs on him.
Snakes are gonna’ do what snakes do; just as pigeons with putrid feathers flock together, leaving the black crow left behind like an intruder in the dust.
“Hush you bird, my baby is sleepin’
Maybe got a dream worth a-keepin’
Whoa you team, and just keep a-creepin’
At a slow clip-clop
Don’t you hurry with the surrey
With the fringe on the top…” – “Surrey With The Fringe On Top”, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II[8]
At the present moment in time, the scene of a prairie breeze whistling through the colorful strands of décor in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma” may seem so far away. Yet, it is fringe which has a way of capturing the twinkling spotlight in one’s eye.
Some may say that there are just a few oddball elements within the once Grand Old Party. You know those cranks and those off the deep end that are mostly ignored, are the ones which could be referenced.
Yet, it is the fringe on top of the Republican Party that is steering the surrey carriage of conservatism and all which is situated beneath its’ umbrella off the cliff of American democracy.
Normal has gone bye-bye, as the fanatical fringe has taken the lead.
Each twisted strand of the fringe aligns in mutual interest, as a man with a plan and lady of agenda make their play side by side.
On the horizon, some of us who doubt what is actually happening in this country may wonder if a balancing force stands in the distance to right things that are oh so wrong in the lane of lawless ways in half a dozen years’ haze.
Who shall calm the waters to a state of stillness?
Shall it be a knight on a white steed?
Or, shall it be darkness.
Queue Clarence Thomas onto the scene. He may not be the leading man of this situation, but as a supporting player he holds a vote that can shift legality with the wind.
Gent with the plan knows this Supreme Court Justice man, for John Eastman[9] used to clerk for Clarence Thomas. Lady of agenda, whose last name is a real mind-bender, is a belle from Omaha, Nebraska with a faint fragrance of a failed coup, otherwise known as Ginni Thomas, Clarence’s woo.
And, to Clarence Thomas, in whose concurrence[10] in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that overturned Roe v. Wade brought up the reconsideration of Obergefell to possibly be overturned next; he should look in the mirror and think about eviscerating Loving v. Virginia also. Maybe, that might make him rethink screwing around with precedents. But, then again, he is “Clearance” Thomas. Full sale!!
“In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.” – Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas
He and his missus seem perfect for each other, as he’s overturning precedents of over fifty years and she’s woven herself into a swath of sedition to overturn elections.
Under the banner of heaven, when Ginni puts her mind to getting something to go on the right and narrow line, there is no stopping her path of faith. It doesn’t matter how at odds against democracy or and nonsensical it may be.
“Release the Kraken and save us from the left taking America down.” – Ginni Thomas, November 19, 2020[11]
Ginni Thomas’ text to White House Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows was not as off-the-wall as many would think when propelling Sidney Powell forward as being the face of the crusade, for there was one other person who agreed with the baseless claims of hacked voting machines, Italian intrigue, and a long dead Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez.
“After seeing the massive Voter Fraud in the 2020 Presidential Election, I disagree with anyone who thinks a strong, fast, fair Special Counsel is not needed, IMMEDIATELY. This was the most corrupt election in the history of our Country, and it must be closely examined!”- President Donald J. Trump, December 23, 2020[12]
At the time when this was tweeted, the man in the oval office already had tapped a person at a late night meeting on Friday, December 18th, 2020[13] that would fit the bill for what he wanted in a special counsel. Ding, ding, ding – it’s Sidney Powell!!
It was all just smoke and mirrors to create an illusion of what Trump wanted the world to see. Of course, if there is a Special Counsel named, then the American public would obviously come to the conclusion that there must be something wicked underfoot that occurred in that year’s election.
In the same mode as Donald J. Trump, attorney Sidney Powell has monetized fake grievances and scatter-brained theories to raising a total of more than $14 million dollars so far. And, of course, she can spend the funds any which way she pleases. For Sidney, it is for those in agreement of mutually, fringe ideology.
Powell’s organization, Defending the Republic, is providing the defense for Oath Keeper’s founder, Stewart Rhodes[14], other members of his group, as well as a member of the Proud Boys[15].
“Just say it was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the Republican congressmen” – President Donald J. Trump
There were six Republican members of Congress that came hat in hand to the White House to plead their cases for getting a golden ticket of a pardon[16] from President Donald J. Trump. Five of them wanted this stay out of jail card primarily over their involvement in the events swirling in the tornado of the Big Lie.
Andy Biggs of Arizona, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Louie Goemert of Texas, Marjorie Taylor-Greene of Georgia, Mo Brooks of Alabama, and Matt Gaetz – Florida.
Matt Gaetz was a tad needier than the others on this list of politicos for what he wanted the pardon to encompass was a blanket pardon for any misdeeds he’d done in his past. Oddly enough, the key word ‘blanket’ might just fit the Florida congressman, for he has been under investigation for his dirty deeds[17] beneath the sheets.
With the Big Lie, the networking of nuttiness goes round and round, as everyone is now trying to cover their asses when a whiff of criminal exposure comes to bear.
Ginni Thomas’ texts to Mark Meadows and dubious doings have been the source of peaking the interest of the January 6th Committee, that had begun their hearings on June 9th, 2022. Probably by the next portion of this Committee’s hearings that are soon to be coming in July, they might just treat her like any contestant on “The Price is Right” and bellow: Mrs. Clarence Thomas – Come On Down!!!”
Overview of the First Hearing – June 9, 2022
“It Was All Trump!”
As the first hearing[7] of the January 6th Committee began, Chairman Bennie Thompson and co-chair Liz Cheney gave an overview of the events of that day, with a specific focus on President Trump’s actions and inactions in getting the destruction of the Capitol to stop.
“I had three discussions with the president that I can recall. One was on November 23rd, one was on December 1st, and one was on December 14th. And I’ve been through sort of the give and take of those discussions. And in that context, I made it clear I did not agree with the idea of saying the election was stolen and putting out this stuff, which I told the president was bullshit. And, you know, I didn’t want to be a part of it, and that’s one of the reasons that went into me deciding to leave when I did. I observed, I think it was on December 1st, that, you know, how can we – you can’t live in a world where – where the incumbent administration stays in power based on its view, unsupported by specific evidence, that the election – that there was fraud in the election.” Attorney General William J. Barr, Trump Administration
During the chaos of January 6th, 2021, while Donald Trump was derelict of duty in protecting the Capitol or doing anything to give half a damn about the madness, another man stood firm in what needed to be done to regain control over the insurrection taking hold.
“There were two – two or three calls with Vice-President Pence. He was very animated and he issued very explicit, very direct, unambiguous orders. There was no question about that. And, and he was – and – and I can give you the exact quotes I guess from some of our records somewhere. But, he was very animated, very direct, very firm. And to Secretary (of Defense) Miller, get the military down here. Get the Guard down here, put down this situation, etc.” – General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
At a later point on January 6th, a conversation between General Milley and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, the Chairman’s interaction with the Trump White House had been the polar opposite:
“He said we have – we have to kill the narrative that the Vice-President is making all the decisions. We need to establish the narrative that, you know, that the President is still in charge and that things are steady or stable or words to that effect. I immediately interpret that as politics, politics, politics. Red-flag for me, personally, no action. But I remember it distinctly.” – General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
As Trump’s Big Lie was rearing wildly down the calendar of days to January 6, members of the White House counsel’s office were in a mad dash of trying to reign in the President’s outlandish behavior. The team of White House lawyers, led by Pat Cipollone had even threatened to resign. Nonetheless, a senior advisor to the President gave half-shrug of concern over the unprecedented possibility of the White House Counsel’s office being cleared out. His name is Jared Kushner, son-in-law of Donald J. Trump.
Like Ginni Thomas, Mr. Kushner seemed omnipresent with a portfolio that remains ever expansive and global with his father-in-law’s blessings. Jared’s here, Jared’s there, Jared’s Mr. Do-It-All!
“Like I said, my interest at that time was on trying to get as many pardons done. And I know that, you know, he was always to – him and the team were always saying, oh, we’re going to resign. We’re not going to be here if this happens, if that happens. So I kind of took it up to just be whining to be honest with you”. – Jared Kushner
Busy man was Jared, in getting the pardons together for the final months of the Trump administration. But, I guess he and his beloved Ivanka were also pondering what mansion or millionaire mile they would be living upon after her daddy left the White House.
“Mike Pence, I hope you are going to stand up for the good of our Constitution and for the good of our country. And if you’re not, I’m going to be very disappointed in you, I will tell you right now.” – President Donald J. Trump, January 6th, 2021
In unison, men and women who were enraptured at that scene hurled the following promise of pain at one man who was targeted by Donald Trump –
“Bring out Pence. Bring him out. Bring out Pence. Bring him out. Bring out Pence. Hang Mike Pence. Hang Mike Pence. Hang Mike Pence. Hang Mike Pence!!”
As that chant continued for several minutes, in the distance was a recently erected gallows on grounds of the Capitol complex to make the words become action for the then Vice-President of The United States of America, Mike Pence.
As the storm of hate, pepper-spray, and bedlam filled the air on that somber day, Donald J. Trump reminisced with an otherworldly sense of affection at what happened –
“They were peaceful people. These were great people. The crowd was unbelievable. And I mentioned the word love. The love — the love in the air, I’ve never seen anything like it.” – President Donald J. Trump
At the first hearing of the January 6th Committee, two witnesses recounted the indescribable reality they faced. From two different perspectives, a police officer and a filmmaker came to face one another at the Capitol:
“It was carnage. It was chaos. I – I can’t – I can’t even describe what I saw. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that, as a police officer, as a law enforcement officer, I would find myself in the middle of a battle. You know, I – I’m trained to detain, you know, a couple of subjects and – and handle – you know, handle a crowd, but I – I’m not combat trained. And that day, it was just hours of hand-to-hand combat, hours of dealing with things that were way beyond any – any law enforcement officer has ever trained for. And I just remember – I just remember that moment of stepping behind the line and just seeing the absolute war zone that the west front had become” – Officer Carolyn Edwards, United States Capitol Police, June 9, 2021[18]
“I documented the crowd turn from protesters to rioters to insurrectionists. I was surprised at the size of the group, the anger, and the profanity. And for anyone who didn’t understand how violent that event was, I saw it, I documented it, and I experienced it.” – Nick Quested, Documentary Filmmaker, June 9, 2021[19]
The subject matter of Nick Quested’s documentary project he was working on at the time of late 2020 and early 2021 was ‘why Americans are so divided when Americans have so much in common’. Quested and some of his colleagues on the documentary had been at several marches with varied members of the Proud Boys.
In a rejoinder to President Trump’s shout-out at that second Presidential Debate in October of 2020 of ‘stand back and stand by’, Enrique Tarrio, the then chairman of the Proud Boys gave a texting thumbs up to the leader of the free world with the following three words: “Standing by sir”.
Documentarian Quested was lucky enough to be at the right place and right time when Tarrio and Stewart Rhodes of the Oath Keepers had a coming together at an underground garage in Washington. Although there was no audio from what both men were saying to one another, just the fact that Rhodes and Tarrio were in the same location meeting is a visible piece of proof in showing that they are connected.
Spirit of a date can provide a guidepost to a certain happening or a backdrop for a blueprint of mythical rebirth.
1776 is more than just a year on a calendar it’s the seeding of an idea of what this nation was coming to be. The Proud Boys see it this way, as in an indictment of some of their members a document[20] with the title, “1776 Returns” shows their itinerary at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021. But, 1776 also has a special meaning for the Biggest Loser of All – Donald J. Trump.
***Before I go any further, I would like to give a special word of gratitude to the countless civil servants who diligently keep track of all historical documents. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), The Office of the Federal Register (OFR)[21], and the U.S Government Publishing Office (GPO) are truly heroic people. As I was researching this article, it was through the National Archives that I found out they are the entity that archived[22] the website of The Trump White House and not the former administration allowing information to be seen post-presidency.****
It was on the archive that I came across one of Trump’s pet peeves and projects in his pushback against progress during the summer of 2020, “The President’s Advisory 1776 Commission Final Report”.
Within this 45 page report, Trump’s 1776 commission expresses how the expansion of rights for those who have always been shut-out of equality are really the ones who should just rest on a false laurel of colorblindness and not stand with a stiffened backbone in proclaiming their own identity.
“As the 1960s advanced, however, many rejected King’s formulation of civil rights and reframed debates about equality in terms of racial and sexual identities. The Civil Rights Movement came to abandon the nondiscrimination and equal opportunity of colorblind civil rights in favor of “group rights” and preferential treatment. A radical women’s liberation movement reimagined America as a patriarchal system, asserting that every woman is a victim of oppression by men. The Black Power and black nationalist movements reimagined America as a white supremacist regime. Meanwhile, other activists constructed artificial groupings to further divide Americans by race, creating new categories like “Asian American” and “Hispanic” to teach Americans to think of themselves in terms of group identities and to rouse various groups into politically cohesive bodies..” – The 1776 Report, The President’s Advisory 1776 Commission, January 2021[23]
Like always, Donald J. Trump thinks he can control the narrative of other people’s lives, just because he can get some phrases and paragraphs slapped in between some glossy pages. And, even the report that Trump is so proud of squawking about has chunks[24] of it ‘borrowed’ from other sources.
Narrative is now in the hands of the January 6th Committee, and you have no say in what we all are going to find out about you and that affection for authoritarianism.
