Ruowen Lu: Waterless

During my childhood there was a beautiful lake by my house. For all the kids growing up in the neighborhood, the lake was like our backyard – a place to play and see friends. About 5 years ago, the city decided to reclaim the lake into land for commercial use. Water was drained and replaced with a luxury shopping district. People got used to the new center quickly, but for me, every time I walked by the mall, I still see the lake I used to play around. With some nostalgia, confusion, and primarily helplessness- Waterless is made.

It was my first time making a video and I didn’t know any filmmaking techniques or rules. I planned out the scenes in my head and just went for them. When I first started shooting, I only had two scenes in mind and came up with the dream scene much later. Initially, the water balloon part was just to contrast the past with the waterless “reality.” However, my film teacher inspired me with the idea of using a war metaphor to create a sense of irony to the dream scene. Likewise, with other spontaneous decisions, I added random elements to the film but luckily the dots all connected at the end and served the overall story well.

Looking back, I am glad this is my first film experience. In a way, ignorance of the filming rules gave me freedom and allowed me to follow my heart.  Now after having more experience, I can’t approach a film without worrying about the structure of the story, character development, etc.  Sometimes, when I am overthinking my work, I think about Waterless and tell myself to relax because the story will come together at the end.

About The Author: Ruowen discovered her passion for film last year when she made a video for her acting class. She now studies at the University of Pennsylvania, intending to major in environmental science and cinema studies. She hopes to use her artistic skills to advocate for the environment and helps green organization reach high impact. Ruowen also has a background in theatre and sometimes acts in her own films when she has spontaneous ideas. Even though it is hard to operate the camera while acting, Ruowen finds it fun and a great way to make short experimental films.

Fredericks of Hollywood…the words bring back fond memories of when I first encountered the brand.  I must have been 15 years old.  Shopping with my mom and some girlfriends at the mall.  We passed the store and my head turned.  I was drawn to the lace, colors and mystery of the items in the window.  My mom was a very straight-laced type of woman and wanting to bestow her only daughter with the best morals, I was shooed away from the store when I asked what it was all about.  That endeavor only peeked my interests and I aimed to get back to that store the first chance I could get.  I spent only a few minutes in the store the first time I could escape an adult long enough to get a glimpse.  Years later I ordered a catalog in my mom’s name.  I would rush home from school to intercept the catalogues so that I could save up and order a few things.  I was hooked.  My lifelong fetish.  There is something perfectly naughty about enjoying sexy lingerie.  It makes a girl feel desired on a whole new level…seduction, power.  Wear something from Fredericks and instantly, I am ready. A Sundae has hot fudge, whipped cream and a cherry.  I would pick that over a scoop of vanilla any day.  My advice, present him with a decadent treat.  You won’t be disappointed.

Since opening Tony Ward Studio in 1984, Ward achieved global notoriety for his first published book on erotic photography, the controversial and highly praised OBSESSIONS. The monograph was followed by four more challenging and critically acclaimed volumes on photographic eroticism at the turn of the century. Scholars that specialize in the history and aesthetics of photography such as A.D. Coleman, Rick Wester and Reinhold Misselbeck have written illuminating essays that accompanied the artist’s published works.

Tony Ward has been teaching Photography courses at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design since the Fall of 2010. He currently offers an array of photo-centric works including image emblazoned clothing, original prints, private galleries for members only, and books by the artist.   In addition, via the artists web portal visitors can access galleries of leading artists who are affiliates of Tony Ward Studio by visiting: www.TonyWard.com.
