LOOKING GLASS

.

Do you actually pay attention to the details in life? Personally, I have to say that I definitely don’t really pay attention to that many details in life, but I wish I did. Sometimes we get so caught up in trying to accomplish something big, that we fail to notice the little things that gives life its magic.

That seems to be a very common thing that happens nowadays, especially when at Penn. Everyone seems to be caught up in such a fast-paced life that small life details become even more minute. Similarly, in this day and age where fashion is also a way of self-expression, the little details are over looked as well.

Fashion consists of both the actual clothing and all the accessories that add more detail and expression to each outfit. However, since all the things combine to form a statement, no one pays attention to each individual part. Each part by itself could be deemed as too simple and not worthy of attention. What needs to be focused on is how they all come together and express something.

But contrary to what those people think, I think that there most definitely is beauty in simplicity. The little details that add up to be a bigger picture are the things that give life its magic, and should be the center of focus. Because of this, I decided to use the small simple accessories that people use in fashion to build a fashion piece in my still life pictures. They represent the little details that we overlook in life, simple and small but important. Small things add up. Then using the magnifying lenses to magnify the details of each object, I wanted to use that to represent the looking glass that we should be using to observe these minute details we too often look over in life. We do not need much to be able to notice the little things. We just need to be able to stop and actually take the time to appreciate the magic and beauty each little thing brings.

Dyana sat quietly in the back of the class listening intently as the students were engaged in a conversation with Heidi Lee, the remarkably talented hat designer from New York City.  Heidi made the short train ride from New York City to Philadelphia’s 30th St. Station during an evening when it was raining sideways and unseasonably cold.  Undeterred, Ms. Lee began to unpack one by one her artful pieces of handmade millinery that brought her talents into the news and the New York spot lights.  Dyana like the other models that attended the session at the University of Pennsylvania’s Photography & Fashion class was eager to model the unusually designed millinery pieces.

After Heidi Lee gave her talk about the evolution of her work and her having been honored by a highly bestowed millinery award from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the class broke into groups to photograph models from Main Line Models & Talent, a Philadelphia based agency, wearing the artists masterpieces.  I made this portrait of Dyana as part of lighting demo for the session.

Fredericks of Hollywood…the words bring back fond memories of when I first encountered the brand.  I must have been 15 years old.  Shopping with my mom and some girlfriends at the mall.  We passed the store and my head turned.  I was drawn to the lace, colors and mystery of the items in the window.  My mom was a very straight-laced type of woman and wanting to bestow her only daughter with the best morals, I was shooed away from the store when I asked what it was all about.  That endeavor only peeked my interests and I aimed to get back to that store the first chance I could get.  I spent only a few minutes in the store the first time I could escape an adult long enough to get a glimpse.  Years later I ordered a catalog in my mom’s name.  I would rush home from school to intercept the catalogues so that I could save up and order a few things.  I was hooked.  My lifelong fetish.  There is something perfectly naughty about enjoying sexy lingerie.  It makes a girl feel desired on a whole new level…seduction, power.  Wear something from Fredericks and instantly, I am ready. A Sundae has hot fudge, whipped cream and a cherry.  I would pick that over a scoop of vanilla any day.  My advice, present him with a decadent treat.  You won’t be disappointed.
