Needle Piercings

.

The 1990’s was a time in which Tony Ward’s hometown of Philadelphia catered to a large group of young club goers who didn’t conform to the “norms” of society at large. This group was part of the South Street crowd who listened to electronic music, frequented the numerous tattoo, body piercing parlors and clothing boutiques  that catered to their alternative lifestyles of which often included wearing black latex, leather, bondage attire and a host of other SMBD fetish like adornments.  Tony Ward met the subjects of this series in his  South Street neighborhood where he became friends with and developed a rapport with some of the more well known characters in this sub cultural group in Philadelphia.  The artist was eventually invited by event organizers of this unique element of society to attend RAVE parties at various venues, including one of Philadelphia’s most popular concert venues, the Electric Factory; where Tony Ward was often allowed to set up shop, and given cart blanche to photograph party goers at the events where his exclusive press pass permitted no other photographers but him to document the  characters  he became friends with when they went out to play late into the night.
